Best zero turn mowers ( Reviews 2022)

Last Modified

February 8, 2023 by Hirah Ehsan

Zero turn lawn mower has the ability to cut more efficiently. This is due to its 360-degree turning ability. While in the case of other lawn-cutting machines, in order to get back on track, you will need to maneuver the machine due to its narrow turning ability. These traditional tractors and riding mowers are difficult to use in confined spaces. We have selected some of the best zero-turn mowers for you guys in this article.

There are many similarities between traditional lawn-cutting instruments and the best zero-turn mower. This machine differs from others in its control system. A set of levers on either side of the seat helps you operate the mower in place of a steering wheel.

You move forward by pushing one lever and backward by pulling the other. Pull one lever forward in the direction you want to turn if you want to turn in a circle with no radius. A single turn reduces the turning circle to zero, which enables the machine to turn on a dime.

Having a zero-turn mower on your estate is perfect for getting into tighter spots on your lawn. Also excellent for cutting ball fields, they can be used to create a characteristic pattern on surfaces such as soccer pitches, football fields, and tennis courts.

Landscapers should invest in a zero-turn mower if they want to grow their business. A zero-turn lawn mower in the toolshed will also be beneficial for property managers of large estates and farms.

Zero-turn mowers are a relatively pricey machine for a homeowner. There are dozens of models available online, making your choice feel overwhelming.

For landscapers and owners of large estates, we reviewed the best zero-turn mowers on the market.

Customer Analysis

I was very pleased with how well this mower arrived packaged and protected. For a first-timer, it was easy to get the hang of the controls and start driving. If you have never driven one before, then begin in an open place and away from anything you may hit.

Cutting grass with this mower is very easy and fast. We were able to purchase the unit for a good price, and it came with a more powerful motor than the units we could purchase locally.

The seats weren’t as comfortable as some of the local models, but that’s not a deal-breaker. It would be impossible to buy a better zero-turn than this one if you’re looking for one.

Pros

  • Kohler’s powerful 26 HP engine delivers lots of torque
  • Easy to use
  • Strong and durable
  • Sized for portability
  • Excellent performance in general
  • Maintainable transmissions
  • The ride on this mower is great.

Customer Analysis

My mom, 64 years old, and her property were the recipients of this mower I bought online. The process was so easy, and they dropped it right in front of the house. Despite the crate and my husband having to struggle a bit to break it apart, my husband has managed to mow six acres in less than four hours, whereas it usually takes eight to ten hours. I am very happy with my purchase of this mower.

Pros

  • Hydrostatic transmission coupled with dependable Briggs & Stratton engine
  • A wide-cutting width
  • The design is comfortable
  • It took four hours to mow 6 acres, which takes eight to ten hours normally
  • The mower is ideal for flat, large areas.

3. Kawasaki FR691 Series IKON-X 52″ Zero Turn Mower by Ariens 915223

Kawasaki FR691 Series IKON-X 52" Zero Turn Mower by Ariens 915223

Description

The name Ariens is almost like Porsche – you can tell just by looking at it. Many years ago, Ariens began producing snowblowers, zero-turn mowers, and other quality products. Though this mower is considered a residential model, its construction, its durability, and its engines make it more like a commercial mower.

A commercial zero-turn mower from Ariens is a great choice if you want to mow your lawn beautifully. Approximately 45.7 x 21.5 cm – 20.3 cm measure the dimensions of the rear wheels.

These large wheels provide the mower with enough support to keep it from tipping on some slopes. On a two-acre area with some slopes, we tested the triple-blade system with a mulching kit.

It performed very effectively on weeds and thin grass. It only took us 3-4 passes to cut the lawn completely even, even after cutting for just over an hour. After the test, it lasted more than three hours, so we believe its fuel capacity is more than sufficient.

Moreover, we are impressed with the Kawasaki engine used by this 52″ Ariens ZT. This engine helps facilitate quicker and easier machine start-ups, which is one of its main draws. Further, it is much quieter than other players in the market, so you can also use it in your home.

Dimensions

It is around 635 pounds and has dimensions of 77.5 x 63.4 x 40.9 inches. It comes in Orange/Black color.

Analysis

There is a lot of power. Pedal decently on hills with a steepness of over 15 degrees, just remember to descend mountains. Although the suspension under the seat does a good job, it is a little rough to ride. The rough part of my land isn’t tamed yet in western Washington. The mower is of great value and I have no complaints about it.

Pros

  • The engine is a Kawasaki FR V-Twin that produces 23 horsepower.
  • The deck measures 52″ wide and 412″ deep.
  • A cutting width of 52 inches / 132 cm is available.
  • 11-gauge steel makes up the deck.
  • Excellent construction is evident in this product.
  • Armrests and a high-back cushion are provided on the seat.
  • A dial-operated cut height selector enables easy height adjustment.
  • There is a variation in cutting height between 1.5 inches and 4.5 inches.
  • It moves at 7.00 mph in forward motion and 3.00 mph in reverse.
  • Capable of holding 2.80 gals of fuel.

Cons

  • Inexperienced users are not really advised to use it because the deflector shield is easily broken.
  • On uneven turf, there is some bounce.
  •  Noisy behavior

4. Mustang Fit Riding Lawn Mower with 34-inch Deck and 452cc Engine from Troy-Bilt

Mustang Fit Riding Lawn Mower with 34-inch Deck and 452cc Engine from Troy-Bilt

Description

Today’s cheapest zero-turn mower is the Troy-Bilt Mustang Fit 34″. The zero-turn pivot lawn mower is very easy to operate and is also a great choice if you are looking for a zero-turn lawn mower.

With a 34-inch cutting deck and twin blades, the Troy-Bilt Mustang Fit offers the smallest cutting system and deck size. Since it has a short turn radius it has a narrow turning radius, so it can swerve around obstacles and small yards easily.

However, it might not be the best choice for large yards. An EZT hydrostatic transmission powers the 452cc engine, which is powerful enough to mow a large area.

The ability to make a zero-turn saves time and can help you maneuver quickly. For maximum maneuverability, mowers can be controlled in reverse by the operator The smooth seats have a tall seatback with double spring suspension and a lot of legroom.

Hence, I consider this to be my favorite small yard mower today. The frame has a restricted lifetime guarantee, while the other parts have a 120-hour guarantee.

Dimensions

It is around 616 pounds and has dimensions of 78 x 45 x 34.75 inches. It comes in black/red color.

Analysis

It is an easy-to-use mower to operate, without straining your arms or hands. However, you cannot make zero turns with this mower as it will tear the grass out. It is a known fact that zero-turn mowers can ruin lawns.

It can be used just like a tractor. For better results, I first trim around trees and along edges, and on soft spots with a big walk-behind mower before mowing. The ease of use of this mower continues to make it my favorite.

Pros

  • Easy to store in the shed or garage and can pass through most standard gates
  • Flowers and obstacles are easily maneuvered
  • Exceptional warranty

Cons

  • Small tires
  • Cuts grass well, except in wet conditions
  • During tighter turns, it turns jerkily

It is a mower I would highly recommend. I quickly figured out how to control the zero turn on my first try. Handles that can be adjusted are nice. Pros

  • ·The handles are adjustable.
  • Easy to install the seat and connect the safety harness.

Cons

  • Delivery problem

Throughout this review, our favorite model is Snapper’s 2691319 360z. It is worth considering. On wet grass, you can easily maneuver this model thanks to its 23-horsepower Briggs & Stratton motor.

8. Z365R 48 in. 24 HP Gas Dual Hydrostatic Zero-Turn Riding Mower

Z365R 48 in. 24 HP Gas Dual Hydrostatic Zero-Turn Riding Mower

Description

Recent tests we performed on the Z-365 John Deere proved to be among our more difficult ones. During an intermittent week of rain and sunshine, we managed to form perfect growing conditions on a swath of lawn at Lafayette College, Easton, PA.

In the week before we had been testing the Deere, our test zone resembled a hayfield rather than the grass we had been working on just a week ago. Our team is cutting and recutting the area until it is at the proper size, then crosscutting it again. It took a fourth cut to get rid of a bad area.

It has several advantages over its competitor John Deere. Two rugged Hydro Gear EZT transmissions combine to propel a 900-pound vehicle with a pair of Briggs & Stratton V-twin engines, producing 24 horsepower. Ruggedly built, the Deere is great value for the money. Steering was effortless, even over ruts, around fences, and over various obstacles like ruts and signposts.

The Deere plowed through the thickest and tallest grass inside discharge mode, throwing clippings behind it in a steady stream. The grass clippings were mulched when the grass was shorter, instead of being discharged out the side of the deck.

The deck that runs above the track is made of stamped, three-bladed steel with rolled outer edges, doing a great job protecting the pulleys. Grass clippings can be cleared from the exterior by pulling up pully covers that open up and close.

With a gas tank that holds 2.4 gallons and a spacious oil filter that ensures clean oil, the Deere is a model of simplicity. In the filter, there is no oil leakage. It only takes a few seconds to change the oil filter.

Dimensions

This product has dimensions of 75.9 x 41.2 x 62.8 inches and weighs around 507 pounds.

Analysis

My John Deere X500 tractor was replaced by this, and I am very pleased. This is something I should have purchased sooner. Foot pedals make deck raising easy, and steps are only needed to raise the deck.

The only thing I would change is that there is no gas gauge in the cockpit. There is a fuel indicator, and I wouldn’t expect to see it light up. Unfortunately, I ran out of fuel. Another advantage is that repairs can be handled easily. I switched to a regular oil change.

Pros

  • Fast and efficient work.
  •  It is very easy to operate
  •  Good design

Cons

Several hours of legwork were needed

  •  There’s no gauge for gas

 9. Simplicity 2691318 Courier Mower, Riding, Zero Turn, Orange

Simplicity 2691318 Courier Mower, Riding, Zero Turn, Orange

Description

It’s the most comfortable zero-turn model we have out of all the ones we have. With its suspension system, even uneven lawns will no longer cause this vehicle to sway. By having front and rear suspensions on the mower, shaky and bouncy motions can be greatly reduced.

This would be a great addition since you’ll enjoy the stability that it will provide while riding the mower. There are hardly any bumps! Even though this is a commercial quality mower, we are confident in its ability to take care of a residential lawn, due to its perfect size of cutting width.

In addition to this, it offers forward and reverses speeds of 7 and 4 miles per hour, which compete with other leading brands. It provides a comfortable and smooth ride with a suspension comfort system.

Easily transport up to 50 pounds around your lawn with the Utility Cargo Bed (optional on 2691318). You can easily maneuver around your lawn by utilizing zero-turn maneuverability.

The height of the cut can be adjusted by 13 points on the foot.  According to Briggs & Stratton, all stated horsepower levels are based on 3600 RPM and rated by SAE J1940.40. As stated in SAE J2723, Kawasaki’s power figures are gross horsepower. Do not carry passengers or overload them above 50 pounds.

Dimensions

This product’s dimensions are 72 x 55 x 42 inches and weigh around 577 pounds.

Analysis

It has an amazing suspension. My grass is rough, but with the Courier, it rides smoothly, and the cut is excellent. Furthermore, if you include the bagging option, it is perfect for autumn cleanup.

Pros

  • Comes with an ergonomic mesh seat.
  • An all-steel frame and thick-walled pivoting axle provide a strong and durable frame.
  • The parking brake is integrated.
  • From 1.5 to 4.5-inch cutting height position, the cutter offers 13 different cutting heights.
  • The width of the cutting blade is 42 inches.
  • It has a 23 HP B & S Elite Series V-Twin engine.
  • It has a 50-pound weight capacity cargo bed that can be added as an option.

Cons

  • Despite its comfortable nature, the seat isn’t as durable as it might be.

10.POWER+ 42” Z6 ZERO TURN RIDING MOWER ZT4204L

POWER+ 42” Z6 ZERO TURN RIDING MOWER ZT4204L

It is one of the most advanced mowers we have ever seen, gas or electric. While you’re waiting, the best thing you can do is check back often to see what’s available.

It is equated to a 42-inch gas engine in terms of power. Approximately two acres can be mowed with its runtime. Considering the mower is equipped with four lithium-ion 10-Ah batteries and its empty bays for two more, it seems plausible.

We were particularly intrigued by the fact that these batteries can be removed. The mower can be powered as a cordless drill when you have extra batteries (or buy some more) or if you already have the Ego battery system.

You can also plug the charger into an outlet in your garage using the cable that comes with it. In addition to the advanced features, this mower offers a variety of other benefits.

Batteries for the deck motors and the drive motors are fed from the battery bank. With all those controls, you can increase the cutting quality, the range of the battery, and the battery run time.

Analysis

It’s nice to have a riding mower with Ego power+ and 42″ Z6 zero-turn capabilities. Taking a battery was a little unnerving for me. A second gas zero-turn from Ariens was too wide for my lot, and it was cumbersome.

Although not packed or torn up the lawn, the 42 gave a much better cut and was surprisingly lighter, even in a damp spring. The single charge cut almost twice as much lawn as I had previously.

In addition, it is very comfortable and allows me to climb up and down hills with ease. This slope would sometimes cause the old gas mower to slide. I enjoy driving it much more because it’s quieter. Made with care and thought.

Pros

  • An electric lawnmower of superior quality
  • Assembling this product is easy thanks to simple instructions
  • Leaf-cutting is a breeze with the blade speed.
  • Users will find the interface to be very intuitive.

Cons

  • Only mow 0.5 acres of the lawn.
  • Handlebar power delivery is inconsistent.
  • It is incredibly frustrating to hear the frame rattle.

Statistics

Based on latest research, the global demand for zero-turn mowers was projected at 612.9 thousand sets in 2021 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.4% between 2021, 2022 and 2025.

Technology and product developments have led to several advancements in zero-turn mowers in recent years. Through the introduction of GPS-equipped and remote-controlled equipment, gardening has become easier since it can be tracked, monitored, and handled remotely.

The number of consumers participating in gardening activities has also increased. Over the next few years, these factors are expected to contribute significantly to market growth. There will also be an increase in demand for landscaping services due to the presence of large-scale commercial infrastructure properties.

During the forecast period, the commercial sector accounted for 57.0% of revenue. The government’s and public agencies’ investments in improving public lands, like the parklands, and yards next to historical monuments will sustain the demand for products in this industry segment.

Additionally, the Commercial segment is expected to grow by over 6% over the forecast period, exceeding USD 2,180 thousand by 2025. During the forecast period, the residential sector is predicted to grow at 5.0%.

As of 2021, North America had over 36.5% of the revenue share of the overall industry. During the period 2021 to 2025, we expect the region to grow by over 5.0%. As the number of landscaping activities and golf courses in the region increases, this is expected to lead to growth.

Buyer’s Guide for Zero-Turn Mowers

It can be challenging to find the right zero-turn mower if you do not know what to look for. It’s impossible for these mowers to be used in suburban yards, so they’re an excellent option for large properties only.

Some of these machines, however, are more industrial than others, even though they are designed for heavy-duty work. To get an understanding of the right machine for your work, check out this buyer’s guide for landscapers who service large estates and golf courses.

The motor’s power

Zero-turn mowers have a significant impact on lawn mowing due to their power. Their cutting decks are huge, ranging in size between 42 and 61 inches, depending on the model.

Thus, they must be powered by a powerful motor to move the blades while cutting grass cleanly and efficiently. There will be engines pushing around 25 horsepower in most models.

If your mower offers less than 20 hp, you’re wasting your time because they might either burn out over time or leave bare patches and uncut grass after extended use.

To get the best performance from the machine and extended service life, contractors working on large estates and golf courses will need a motor with at least 24 horsepower.

For best results on your turf, you need more horsepower when the job is larger.

Lawn size and cutting width

When purchasing a zero-turn mower, your first consideration should be the cutting width. A zero-turn mower that has a substantial deck size would be more beneficial for a large lawn.

Your lawn mowing time and effort should be cut in half this way. In picking the size of the deck, there are a few factors to consider. It is common for small zero-turn units to slip and have traction issues. Therefore, if you have a sloppy lawn or one that is soft or sandy, you might not want a zero-turn mower with a cutting height lower than 34.

If you’re only going to use the zero-turn mower for residential purposes, though, you wouldn’t want to buy one that is too large for your lawn. You should not choose a small zero-turn unit or a large one, but something in the middle.

Nevertheless, we recommend that you choose a deck with a width of 42-60 inches and a footprint that can accommodate one to ten acres of land. 48 to 60 inches is the average size of residential units.

The same sizes of zero-turn mowers are also available for commercial use. It is definitely a good idea to have a commercial unit here if you want something that will not require a lot of maintenance.

Fuel tank capacity

We have only included gas-powered zero-turn mowers on our list, so they are only available while they have fuel in the tank. You’ll be able to mow for a long time before you need to refuel your mower if it has a large fuel capacity. Although a small fuel capacity can result in you having to stop when you have a long job, you could run out of fuel.

The maximum speed

The speed of different zero-turn mowers varies a lot, historically, but most are faster than lawn tractors. You may want a mower with a higher maximum speed if you have a large yard with a lot of open space to cut down on mowing time.

Prices

The cost of zero-turn mowers is no doubt high. Nonetheless, they can prove to be a very valuable asset for your lawn. The price can start as low as $2500 for some brands. As the deck grows in size, the price appears to increase. The average cost of a reliable economy unit today is around $3000, while the heavier models run upwards of $6000. Despite the initial price, these machines are worth every penny when you consider the time and effort you can save.

Transmission

Find a zero-turn mower that has a hydrostatic transmission when shopping. It switches gears by using hydraulic fluid and powers the shafts by using mechanics. Hydrostatic models will last through the most extreme conditions, and they will not burn out over time. This is far more fuel efficient, and it comes with a clutch that requires little maintenance.

Controls and levers

Another factor that contributes to operator fatigue is controls and levers. Make sure the control panel is comfortable and ergonomic so that your hands do not get tired while using the device. Soft, ergonomic grips should be featured on levers and controls, making it easier to use the machine. You shouldn’t have to get out of your setting to reach levers or switches on the machine if it has levers and controls.

Displays of digital information

A digital display will display the cutting deck height and rpm when some models have one. Monitors like these allow you to monitor your machine and adjust parameters without having to disassemble the machine and check the settings by hand.

 Features that ensure safety

Before purchasing your machine, be sure to check its safety features. Several models include features to help prevent accidents such as automatic chokes, kill switches, and other mechanisms.

Lawn mowers with battery power

The mowers are mostly powered by gas. There are other options, too. It is possible to find battery-powered zero-turn mowers, which are more environmentally friendly compared to their gas-powered alternatives.

Batteries-powered zero-turn mowers have the advantage of requiring zero maintenance compared with gasoline engines. A battery’s run time is the limiting factor for battery-operated mowers.

With most gas mowers, you will get a much higher power output for a lower cost, as battery power models tend to be less powerful and to be smaller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the zero-turn mower suitable for slopes?

Mowers that don’t turn can handle slopes as steep as 15 degrees. Additionally, many models are equipped with hydrostatic transmissions and split differentials, which deliver power to a wheel that lacks traction independently. You can also find models that provide roll-over security for when the machine turns on you on an uphill route.

How does a zero-turn mower compare to a regular mower?

Speed and maneuverability are the hallmarks of ZT mower units. Mowing a lawn with this device can be cut in half in both time and effort. The operator of the mower can also ride the machine, which makes it more comfortable and easier to perform the task than conventional mowers like push types and walk-behinds.

How do zero-turn lawnmowers work?

Let’s start from the beginning. In comparison to standard riding mowers, what makes a zero-turn lawn mower different? Zero-turn lawn mowers are the most maneuverable of all lawn mowers.

Turing a zero-turn mower around is much easier than turning a lawn tractor because the wheels turn at an angle. It takes less time and less effort to mow around trees and landscaping when using a zero-turn mower. In addition to being faster than lawn tractors, zero-turn mowers are also usually more effective.

You can mow your lawn faster this way. Compared to small areas, large areas can require significantly longer to mow. Mowers with zero-turn blades usually do not work well on hills. You may want to consider another riding lawn mower if you have inclines on your property.
